Abstract

Iranian architectural studies in recent decades, despite significant advances in descriptive and historical dimensions, remain largely unexplored in many aspects, and the weakness of studies in “understanding Iranian architecture” as a theoretical and analytical discipline is distinctly felt. One of the fundamental gaps in this field is the lack of a systematic approach to understanding Iranian architecture that transcends the mere physical description of buildings by addressing structure, meaning, and cultural transformations. Theory, as a tool for analyzing and understanding fundamental concepts, plays a crucial role in achieving a deeper comprehension of architecture, enabling the interpretation of transformations, meanings, and cultural structures within architecture. Linguistics is one of the fields whose potential has received inadequate attention in the study of Iranian architecture. Over the past several decades, linguistics has significantly shaped theoretical frameworks in the social sciences, anthropology, aesthetics, and philosophy. Although architecture has also been influenced by linguistics, compared with the aforementioned fields, fewer efforts have been made in this field. The fundamental similarities between language and architecture, as two structured cultural systems, provide a basis for applying linguistic concepts to architectural analysis. Both constitute structured, meaning-laden systems, and their study yields substantial insights into the modes of thought, dispositions, and ways of life characteristic of the peoples of a given region.
This study explores the theoretical and analytical capacities of linguistics for understanding Iranian architecture by employing linguistic approaches. The structural parallels between language and architecture, as two cultural systems, facilitate the application of linguistic concepts to architectural analysis. The central research question is: “How can linguistic approaches be utilized to develop a systematic and analytical framework for the study of Iranian architecture?” On this basis, two approaches are examined in this study: the comparative approach, which addresses the structural comparison of language and architecture from a cultural perspective, and the method-based approach, which investigates the application of linguistic perspectives to the analysis of architecture.
The primary objective of this research is to formulate a linguistic framework for analyzing Iranian architecture, thereby transcending purely descriptive studies and moving towards structural-semantic interpretations of Iranian architectural forms. The present research is theoretical-conceptual in nature and has been conducted using a qualitative approach employing an analytical-comparative method. Data were collected through document analysis and interpreted via directed content analysis and comparative conceptual analysis. The analytical framework of this study is grounded in structural analogy. In this approach, correspondences are established not merely on the basis of superficial similarities between elements, but rather on the underlying structural relationships between the two domains. At this stage, a common analytical framework was established by relying on the structural analogy between language and architecture: mapping the structural components of language (phoneme, morpheme, word, syntax) onto the structural components of architecture (materials, architectural elements, spatial units, spatial organization). This structural analogy serves as the shared foundation for all subsequent analyses. To apply linguistic perspectives to the understanding of architecture, an analogical transfer procedure was employed, comprising three sequential steps: identification of key concepts within each linguistic approach through directed content analysis; establishment of structural correspondences between linguistic and architectural components based on the predefined structural analogy; and inference of equivalent concepts within the domain of architecture.
The comparative approach, demonstrates that by comparing the structural systems of language and architecture within a given culture, it becomes possible to identify systematic relationships between these two domains. This approach constitutes an effort to recognize the correspondence between the structural features of the Persian language and those of Iranian architecture, suggesting that a deeper understanding of Persian and its cultural patterns can yield more comprehensive insights into the foundational principles of Iranian architecture. The method-based approach, in contrast, employs linguistic perspectives and analytical tools to investigate various dimensions of Iranian architecture. In this research, five linguistic perspectives—historical, typological, formalist, functionalist, and cognitive—were adopted as the basis for analysis.
The findings of this research indicate that the proposed framework not only enables the analysis of Iranian architecture at structural, semantic, and historical levels but also addresses existing gaps in scholarly inquiry. At the structural level, the formalist and typological perspectives facilitate the identification of spatial compositional rules and organizational patterns, while further allowing for the discovery of generative structures that govern architectural form and space. At the semantic level, functionalist and cognitive approaches provide the means to interpret the social roles of space, layered meanings, and culturally embedded conceptualizations inscribed within architectural form. At the historical level, the historical linguistic perspective, including its subfields of etymology, dialectology, and lexical borrowing, enables a systematic investigation of formal and semantic transformations, the genealogy of spatial units, regional architectural variations, and intercultural exchanges.
The principal innovation of this research lies in proposing an operational and systematic framework for applying linguistic approaches to the study of Iranian architecture. By bridging the gap between descriptive-historical accounts and deep theoretical analyses, this framework opens new horizons for interdisciplinary inquiry in the field of Iranian architecture and offers a methodological response to the prevailing theoretical deficit in the “systematic study of architecture.” However, the framework is accompanied by certain limitations. First, the present study is predominantly theoretical-conceptual in nature; consequently, the proposed capacities require empirical validation and further elaboration through case studies. Second, the research did not make use of doctoral dissertations and theses in the fields of architectural history and theory. Third, the structural analogy between language and architecture, if not rigorously applied with methodological precision, risks yielding superficial or unsubstantiated correspondences. The most essential step for future research is the empirical testing of this framework through focused case studies that apply a specific linguistic perspective—such as functionalist or cognitive approaches—to concrete examples of Iranian architecture. Such empirical validation would not only assess the framework’s explanatory power but also create opportunities for its refinement and expansion. In sum, linguistic approaches can thus broaden the scope of realist architectural studies and contribute significantly to identifying the foundational structures of Iranian architecture, understanding its historical and cultural transformations, and formulating a coherent framework for its systematic investigation. In this manner, the present study effectively narrows the gap between descriptive reporting and systematic analytical scholarship.
